The human ability to explore the surrounding environment from the perspective of 'oneself,' store it as a memory, and reflect on it again is a fascinating aspect of our existence. This unique capacity allows us to create a personal understanding of the world and our place within it. As Maurice Merleau-Ponty states in his work "Phenomenology of Perception," "The body is our general medium for having a world." It is through our physical being that we discover and interact with the world around us, shaping our experiences and memories.

The idea of the world entering our bodies and attaining eternity within it raises intriguing questions about the nature of utopia and the relationship between the physical and the eternal. If such a scenario were possible, would it lead to a perfect existence, free from the limitations and constraints of the corporeal form? Or would we find ourselves trapped in a world that, while eternal, is disconnected from the rich sensory experiences that define our human existence?

Closed Eyes, 1890

Odilon Redon

This project was inspired by two works. The first work is Michelangelo's unfinished sculpture series, Slaves [Dying Slave, 1513-15]. Usually considered unfinished, these sculptures were originally intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II. The portrayal of the moment just before death in this work later inspired the French artist Odilon Redon, who created a painting series titled "Closed Eyes" (1899). Through Extended Reality, I tried to create the moment of the 'dying body' and 'sense of peace' inspired by these works, as well as the concepts of human 'eternity' and 'finiteness.'
